Martin and Nick run one of the Biology and Zoology second year field courses down at Slapton Ley Field Centre in Devon. The main aim of the course is to encourage an interest in the study of sensory biology. After a one day workshop-style introduction, students work in pairs and initially focus on creating a feasible hypothesis to test and an effective experimental design. There are opportunities to study a range of sensory adaptations that underpin different aspects of animal behaviour in a diverse range of environments: from temporally dynamic terrestrial to marine underwater habitats. The majority of the course then allows students to test their own hypotheses as an experimental project. The final day of the course includes a presentation where each of the teams give a short talk on their findings and an interpretation of their results.
